Week nine of the college football season has gone by, and that means the next snaps of the college football season begins the home stretch.
Week nine was relatively quiet for most alumni as a large amount of teams had their bye week, but for some alumni they took advantage of the extra eyes watching them.
Javin Wright, Nebraska, LB
The journey for seventh year senior and former Hamilton Husky Javin Wright has been far from ideal. Multiple injuries and a health scare with blood clots has set him back throughout his time in Lincoln.
But the journey has led to this year, and this time around Wright is playing with the love and passion that led him to Nebraska in the first place.
According to Ralph Amsden: “Javin Wright is the first Nebraska Cornhusker to have 10 tackles in a game for four straight games since 2004”
Wright didn’t reach that point in Saturday’s contest against Northwestern who did a great job of trying to play away from him. But, Wright made a difference with a game changing interception which led to a game winning touchdown for Nebraska to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Gunner Maldonado, Kansas State, DB
Making only his second start in the secondary for Kansas State, Maldonado had an all-around game that showcased his skills as the Wildcats dominated Kansas once again.
In this year’s edition of the Sunflower Showdown, Maldonado only had five tackles but his skills roaming in the secondary helped prevent multiple receptions for Kansas receivers.
Late in the game to ice the matchup in favor of Kansas State, Maldonado made a great play on the ball and pulled in his second interception of the year and the sixth of his career.
Trey Reynolds, Utah, LB
Another alum making their second start of the season for their respective teams was Utah linebacker Trey Reynolds.
Reynolds was a massive force for Utah in their 53-7 thrashing of Colorado.
Although, he only had three total tackles, it was a stellar performance for Reynolds as he had a sack, two tackles for loss and was a standout in coverage.
EXTRA: Tyler Shough named Saints starting quarterback
Breaking news came out of New Orleans on Tuesday morning as the Saints announced that Hamilton alum Tyler Shough has won the starting job in a battle with Pinnacle alum Spencer Rattler. In week seven, Shough stepped in during the second half of a 23-3 loss to Tampa Bay but he hopes to have more success than Rattler this week versus the Los Angeles Rams.
Shough is a following his time at Hamilton played at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville becoming a starter at each spot before being drafted during April’s NFL Draft.
