Vanderbilt lands commitment from Basha CB Mason Lewis

Five more players made their college commitments over the past three weeks (since our last update). Two of those are to Power Four conferences. Overall, 79 seniors have announced their college intentions – which will not become official until December.

Times for all future games are in Arizona time (MST)

On Oct. 27, Basha cornerback Mason Lewis committed to Vanderbilt. Lewis (6-foot, 195), had originally committed to Cal, but reopened his recruitment in September.

Lewis received his offer from the Commodores back in May during Spring ball. He transferred to BHS after beginning his HS career at Casteel. After becoming eligible mid season, he made 16 tackles with an interception and a forced fumble for the Bears, who will play in the Open Division quarterfinals this Friday night against Williams Field.

SEC Nation will visit the Vanderbilt campus this Saturday morning, televising from 8-10 a.m. on the SEC Network. Alumni Lawn in Nashville will also host the Paul Finebaum show on Friday afternoon. No. 14 Vanderbilt (8-2) will host Kentucky (5-5) for Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. ESPN will have the nationwide broadcast.

It was on Nov. 5 that Aaron Thomas committed to a Big Ten Conference school. The Mountain Pointe offensive tackle will go to college and play football at the University of Minnesota.

Thomas, who is 6-6, and 305 pounds, was originally an Ohio State commit. He was a 5A San Tan Region First Team performer on the O-Line this season.

He credits UM offensive line coach and run game coordinator Brian Callahan for what triggered the change to the Golden Gophers.

”Coach Callahan is one of the best OL coaches in the country,” Thomas said in a text message. “His track record is there. He just helped a player get drafted last spring and he’s a starter as a rookie. And, he just started playing football as a junior, which is a lot like me. I didn’t play OT until last year. Plus, I’ve always liked them. I’ve been there three times and they all came out here to see me, even the head coach (PJ Fleck).”

Minnesota will play a game at Wrigley Field this Saturday against Northwestern. Kickoff will be at 10 a.m. on the Big Ten Network for the Gophers (6-4) and the Wildcats (5-5). Northwestern has played in the historic baseball venue six times since 2010, and it is 0-6 there.

In yet another commitment flip, Derek Worden announced last Tuesday that he has flipped from New Mexico to Washington State. The Queen Creek offensive tackle is 6-5 and 280 pounds.

”In all honesty, I was blown away by the weights program, as well as the nutrition,” Worden said in a text message. “The weights program felt updated and gave me a real sense of competition, which I love. As for nutrition, the dedicated team and technology behind it made me feel confident in their abilities. The coaches were also just amazing.”

Worden also held offers from Arizona, Colorado, Boise State, and Utah State. He has been a monster all season long and has tremendous film from this year both as an offensive lineman and along the D-Line for the Bulldogs.

Washington State posted a 28-3 home win on Saturday against Louisiana Tech. Senior offensive lineman Brock Dieu, a Casteel alum, was one of the Cougars’ captains. WSU travels to Virginia this Saturday to take on James Madison (9-1). At 5-5, the Cougars need one more victory to become bowl eligible.

On Nov. 1, San Tan Charter linebacker Bairyk Schulte committed to Black Hills State University in South Dakota. Schulte, a team captain, also played some offense and caught three touchdown passes as a tight end. On defense, Schulte had 33 tackles, three sacks, and three forced fumbles. He added two more TDs on defense with both a fumble and an interception return.

On defense, Schulte (6-2, 210) is a heat-seeking missile ready to blow up plays in the backfield. He’s also versatile and a three-sport athlete (soccer and baseball) for the Roadrunners.

Black Hills State closed out its season on Saturday with a 55-28 win over New Mexico Highlands. The Yellow Jackets finished with back-to-back 50-point efforts. Competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (Div. II), BHSU ended up at 3-6 in league play and 3-8 overall.

Finally, wide receiver Dominic Painter noted his commitment plans on Oct. 29 to attend George Fox University in Oregon. He is the leading receiver for Pusch Ridge Christian Academy.

”I loved how involved they were with me through the recruiting process and their coaching staff is very genuine,” Painter said in a text message. “The sch is beautiful and not only that, their devotion towards the football program over the years is apparent through the facilities and rebuild. Most importantly, it is a Christ-based program where I can glorify God in a Christ-centered community.”

Painter has 54 catches for 787 yards and has scored 12 touchdowns (three on kickoff returns). He also plays defense for the Lions and has 29 tackles and an interception. Pusch Ridge is in the 3A semifinals and will play top-seeded Benjamin Franklin Saturday night at 6 p.m. at Westwood HS.

George Fox saw its four-game win streak come to an end in the season finale on Saturday at Pacific Lutheran (55-21). The Bruins play in the Northwest Conference (Div. III) and went 4-3 in league play and 4-6 overall.
