Three-star 2027 Williams Field wide receiver Trey Smith has committed to Arizona, he announced Monday night on his X account.

Smith, the No. 569 prospect nationally and the No. 10 prospect in Arizona in the 2027 class according to the 247Sports Composite, chose the Wildcats over offers from Arizona State, Iowa State, Minnesota, and others.

Smith is the first in-state prospect to commit to Arizona in the 2027 class and the second overall.

One of the most significant factors in Smith’s commitment to Arizona was his relationship with wide receiver coach Bobby Wade, who was a hometown hero himself, graduating from Desert Vista in 1999 and playing for the Wildcats from 1999 to 2002.

“He texts me at least once a week and calls me at least every one or two weeks,” Smith said. “He told me how being a hometown hero is like super crazy, and how he could help me because I’m an Arizona kid, so he can relate.”

On top of his relationship with Wade, Smith said he’s received a large amount of love from several members of the staff, which has made him feel like a priority, including head coach Brett Brennan.

Smith said that out of all the schools he’s been offered by, the only head coach whose phone number he has is Brennan’s.

That meant a lot to him.

“I’m actually pretty close with him,” Smith said. “You’re not usually close with the head coach, but they made everything different, like I’m just close with every single coach on the coaching staff. It’s crazy.”

Smith said Arizona’s win over Arizona State in the Territorial Cup had an impact on what went into his decision. Smith did not attend the game.

“It showed who had better receivers,” Smith said. “It showed a lot. It made me feel a lot better about my choice, that I wasn’t wrong.”

Smith said he has a great relationship with some former Arizona high school football products already on the Wildcats’ roster, two of whom are current freshmen, former Hamilton defensive back Dajohn Hinton and former Basha wide receiver Gio Richardson.

“Gio was like, ‘We could be one of the best duos at Arizona,’ and he makes me feel pretty good about (choosing Arizona),” Smith said. “Dajohn texts me every week like, ‘When you going to commit? When you going to commit?’ So it’s super cool.”

At 6-foot, 165 pounds, Smith, who had 36 catches for 695 yards and three touchdowns this season, said he wants to add five to 10 more pounds before he heads down to Tucson. 

“They want me to take the top off there, so I’m super excited,” Smith said.
