Chandler QB Mencl commits to Oregon

As we get set for the start of Spring Ball and the beginning of the Evaluation Period, five players made their college commitments over the past two weeks.

Will Mencl is one of the most sought after quarterbacks with 26 offers, including four from the Big Ten Conference. It was within that league where he made his decision at a press conference last Wednesday. The 6-4, 205-pound Chandler signal caller announced he will be playing for Oregon. Mencl’s other finalists were Auburn and Penn State.

After sharing snaps in his sophomore season (1,058 passing yards, 11 TDs), Mencl was the Wolves starter in 2025 and threw for 3,815 yards with 33 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He completed 70 percent of his attempts.

His stellar junior year saw Chandler finish 10-3 and advance all the way to the Open Division State championship game. Mencl received his offer from the Ducks the day after Chandler defeated Brophy, 45-34 in the quarterfinals. In that game, Mencl (a dual-threat), passed for 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also running for 146 yards (16 carries) and three more scores.

Oregon had seven players selected in the NFL Draft this week. None were quarterbacks as Dante Moore is returning next season (he’s likely a first-rounder in 2027). Tight end Kenyon Sadiq was taken by the Jets with the 16th overall pick and safety Dillon Thieneman was selected by the Bears at No. 25 to give UO a pair of first-rounders. The Ducks went 13-2 last season and won the Orange Bowl to advance to the semifinals in the College Football Playoff. Oregon opens this season on Sept. 5 at home against Boise State in Eugene.

Like Chandler, Canyon View played for a state title last season as the Jaguars made it to the 5A title game. Leading CVHS in sacks was David “Tiki” Teeples. The 6-4, 265-pound defensive tackle made his commitment to Utah last Wednesday on social media.

Teeples was comfortable with the vibes he felt when visiting the Salt Lake City campus.

”It felt just like home,” Teeples said in a text message. “The coaches were amazing and I loved all the people! After doing lots of praying about it, I knew it was the right decision!”

Teeples was a Second Team All-5A Conference selection after compiling 63 tackles and 12.5 sacks. He posts big numbers in the weight room (525-pound squat) and in the classroom (4.20 GPA).

Utah had an Arizona player drafted this week as Caleb Lomu was selected with the 28th overall pick in the first round by New England. The offensive tackle played his HS ball at Highland in Gilbert. The Utes had a pair of players selected in Round 1 as Spencer Fano (also an OL) was taken ninth overall by Cleveland. Utah went 11-2 last season and defeated Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl. The U of U kicks off this season on Thursday, Sept. 3 at home in Salt Lake against Idaho.

Another player heading to the Big 12 Conference is David Rushing. The 6-1, 175-pound receiver from Salpointe Catholic made his commitment to Kansas State last Monday.

Rushing, who brings speed to the position, has a personal-best of 10.88 in the 100 meters. Kansas State may be a program that flies under the radar for some, but Rushing likes the way the coaching staff prepares the Wildcats.

”K-State stood out because the head coach (Collin Klein) and (WR) Coach (Thad) Ward are coaches that develop their players and win consistently without a lot of hype,” Rushing said in a text message. “That matters to me. The coaching staff was real with me from the beginning and clear about how I fit and what they expect. At the end of the day, it came down to development, fit, and trust in the staff. K-State checked all three.”

Rushing caught 34 passes for 589 yards and scored six touchdowns for the Lancers last season. He is planning for an official visit to Manhattan, Kans. the first weekend in June.

Kansas State had two players selected on Saturday as the NFL Draft concluded. Offensive lineman Sam Hecht went in the fourth round to Carolina and safety VJ Payne was taken in the seventh by the New York Jets. The Wildcats finished 6-6 last season, but declined a bowl invitation following the retirement of head coach Chris Klieman along with significant coaching staff turnover. K-State begins the ‘26 season with a home game against Nicholls (La.) on Sept. 5.

One of the top offensive linemen in the state, Ben Lowther, committed to Stanford last Tuesday. The 6-8, 320-pound tackle from Centennial went on a visit to the Palo Alto campus earlier this month to watch the Stanford coaches teach their players.

”I really feel like myself at the school,” Lowther said in a text message. “I walk around and see myself being happy even in the hardest of days. The football program and coaches line up with where and what I’m trying to do with my career and I fully believe in them to take me there!”

Lowther is ready for the rigorous curriculum at Stanford with his 3.92 GPA. He takes AP and Honors classes at CeHS and had previously committed to the school last fall, but then wanted to re-evaluate things after the new coaching staff came in. Tavita Pritchard, a former quarterback for the Cardinal, was hired in November as the new head coach.

Stanford wrapped up its four weeks of Spring Ball on Saturday. Both Wednesday and Friday’s practices were held on the grass inside Stanford Stadium. They will next reconvene in late July for the start of fall practices. The Cardinal will start at home on Aug. 29 against Hawaii. Stanford finished 4-8 in 2025.

Finally, Brophy long snapper Brody Wolfenden announced his commitment to the U.S. Air Force on Thursday. The 6-foot, 190-pounder was a First Team All-6A Central selection last season. Wolfenden’s snaps were on the money all season as kicker Jack Carson was 47-of-48 in extra points and also booted eight field goals.

Last weekend, Air Force defensive line coach Alex Means was by the Wolfenden house for dinner. Wolfenden received his offer from Air Force in March.

Air Force finished 4-8 last season, but will have 58 lettermen returning this season. Seven of those are defensive starters. The Falcons are still in the Mountain West Conference and will open at home on Sept. 5 against Duquesne (Pa.).

Peoria WR Tyson Jr. receives offer from Wisconsin

Colleges across the nation continue to take notice of the prep talent in Arizona each season. More than 340 players from the Class of 2026 signed with schools to advance their football careers and receive an education.

Times for all future games are in Arizona time.

Last Monday, Dontay Tyson Jr. received his 25th offer from Wisconsin. The 6-3, 185-pound receiver has played on varsity for Peoria since his freshman year. Last season, Tyson caught 37 passes in seven games for 448 yards and seven touchdowns. He has been running track this spring and just set a new personal-best in the 100-meters on Wednesday with a time of 10.79 seconds. In March, he traveled up to Washington for the Huskies’ Junior Day. Wisconsin will play in its 118th Homecoming in its long history on Oct. 3 against Michigan State. There will be a full slate of activities that week in Madison, including the Homecoming Parade. The Badgers finished 4-8 last season.
