Off-duty officers reported a fight between approximately 100 people, including players, parents, and coaches, at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa during a 7-on-7 tournament hosted by Red Zone Elite on Sunday, Mesa Police stated in an email to Arizona Varsity. No injuries were sustained, and no arrests were made.

Mesa Police said AAG was also hosting a youth soccer tournament in the same vicinity, but it had nothing to do with Sunday’s altercation.

70 police from multiple agencies, including Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, and 3 MCSO officers, responded just after 1 p.m. Within 45 minutes of officers arriving, all the soccer fields were cleared.

Red Zone Elite confirmed in a post on Instagram that no weapons were “used or even brandished” during the fight.

Arizona Varsity has confirmed with multiple eyewitnesses that the altercation that drew a large police presence was in response to a second incident that followed the conclusion of a first that occurred after a semifinal game between the 7-on-7 organizations AZ Dolphins and YNGSTAR.

One eyewitness at the game told Arizona Varsity that the AZ Dolphins had nothing to do with the altercation, despite YNGSTAR’s official Instagram account claiming an AZ Dolphins player attempted to “strike” a YNGSTAR player, and the YNGSTAR player “acted in self-defense.”

Red Zone Elite owner Jason Gourley told Arizona Varsity over the phone that he cannot confirm or deny YNGSTAR’s claim at this time, as investigations are ongoing.

Mesa Police stated in the email to Arizona Varsity that approximately 10 players from two 7-on-7 organizations were involved in the second altercation. Gourley said that the altercations, though initially physical, eventually turned into a shouting match.

Mesa Police said that no force was used by any officers on scene.

Red Zone Elite sent a note to players, coaches, and families shortly after the altercation on Sunday, stating that the remaining games would not be played.

Red Zone Elite issued a statement on its Instagram Sunday night: “As we continue to investigate the matters that escalated this afternoon, we assure you that all parties involved will face consequences as we see fit, including being banned from all future Red Zone Elite tournaments, as well as other tournament hosts within our network.”
